Kentucky is the only inland state bordered by water on three sides. The Ohio River borders the state in the north, the Mississippi River is on the west, and the Big Sandy River and the Tug River border the east.

The Appalachian Mountains stretch along the northern and eastern portions of the state. 

Residents of Kentucky experience a humid, subtropical climate. With four distinct seasons, there are cold winters with some snow and warm, humid, rainy summers. Rainfall occurs throughout the year. Small, higher areas on the southeast side of the state experience oceanic climate influenced by the Appalachians Mountains.

The horse culture in Kentucky adds to the state’s rich history. Along with dozens of legendary horse farms, Kentucky hosts one of the most iconic horse races in the country. The Kentucky Derby is an annual horse race that has been dubbed “the most exciting two minutes in sports.” The event is filled with theatrical hats, celebrity spotting, and fun, as over 10,000 spectators cheer on the thoroughbred horses. 

Along with the long history of horse racing, Kentucky is also home to the world’s longest known cave system, Mammoth Cave National Park. There are many recreational activities available such as horseback riding, cave tours, trails, camping, and water activities on the Green and Nolin Rivers. 

Golfers will enjoy the picturesque courses with views of the waterways, Appalachian Mountain backdrops, and various experience levels offered at one of the many golf courses throughout the state. 

Cost of Living & Taxes

Kentucky is considered one of the more tax-friendly states for retirees. Social Security benefits are not taxes and Kentucky offers retirement income exclusion up to $31,110. A tax break is available to homeowners 65+ with $37,600 of the assessed value of residential property exempt from state taxes.

The cost of living in Kentucky is significantly lower than the national average. There is a state sales tax is 6 percent. 

Health Care

There are over 100 hospitals throughout the state. The University of Kentucky Albert B. Chandler Hospital is the No. 1 hospital in Kentucky. The hospital is nationally ranked in cancer and considered high performing in three specialties. St. Elizabeth Healthcare Edgewood-Covington Hospitals is the No. 2 in the state. Both hospitals are high performing in eight procedures/conditions, respectively.
